Assistant Minister

Calling all Servants

Did you know that 92% of low level readers in the 3rd grade will not go to college? Did you know that 3rd grade reading scores are now used to forecast how large prison need to be built to meet the future capacity? Or did you know that 80% of the prison population are either low level readers or non readers? Do these statistics alarm you as much as they scare me?

Is there anything we can do about this problem? James 1:27 says "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress..." and I believe the modern day single parent problem is similar to the distress in our culture like orphans and widows wer during biblical times. Many of our kids today are left to raise themselves and parents are stretched so thin they cut corners in their child's education. Many are not succeeding and barely make it beyond 3rd grade reading, writing, and arithmetic.

I want you to consider getting involved in a program that our church and churces in the Forest Park area are involved in to tackle this problem. An organization call One City has a program called "Whiz Kids" where they bring together concerned people who are 12 years and older to tutor kids once a week during the school year to help them get beyond that 3rd grade level. The school this program will be held in is Winton Woods Elementary on Kingsbury Drive in Forest Park.

We have met with the administration and set up times and days. the only thing left is to get volunteers. Please take time to pray about this. See if God is calling you to step forward and step out in faith, to be the church, the people, we are called to be. No more letting other people get their hands dirty: It is time we serve and be the Bdy of Christ in our community. Ponder this: If these kids cannot read, how can they ever pick up a Bible and understand how good and great the love of Christ is? So, will you help? Will you invest in this cause? On August 3rd join our morning worship services will have a representative from "Whiz Kids" challenge us to join. Please be praying the God moves, guides, and directs you towards serving.

Simply His,

Josh
